Materials and methods / Ink

The principal ink used by calligraphers is lampblack, the soot produced by burning linseed oil and kerosene. This is mixed with gum Arabic to fix it to the paper. Colored inks such as arsenic yellow, lead white, cochineal red or gold, were also traditionally used in the past, usually against darker backgrounds.
