Materials and methods / Paper

The paper is first dyed with tea, onion skins or other natural substances to create the desired shade. It is then coated with one layer of starch and three layers of ahar, a mixture of egg-whites and alum. Once the papers are dry they are thoroughly burnished with an agate stone. They are then put aside for at least a year before they can be used. Thinner and larger papers are previously stretched on wooden boards and then coated.
